Sleighbells' History

Many People who come out to Sleighbells are curious about the history of the property. We've been in business for 20 years, but every summer, at least once a week a person will come in and say that they have been driving by our sign for 10 years, and the decided to stop in today. They wish they had stopped earlier!

Sleighbells began in 1978 when the Christmas trees were first planted by founders Tom and Betty. The property was originally a filbert and walnut orchard and when it came time to clear the land for tress, old cars were found buried beneath the brush!

The gift store was started in 1985. When the building was originally constructed, it was not designed as a gift store, but as a home for special needs children. That is why the store has so many nooks and crannys for exploring today. The state zoning regulations at the time prevented that from happening, and so Sleighbells was born! The original store was smaller than it is today, with the addition being completed in 1991. The seldom used back stairway used to be the main entrance to the second floor.  We were the first store in the northwest to carry Christopher Radko products when we opened in 1985, and one of the first in the nation.

The founding owners closed Sleighbells in October 1999 after deciding to retire. They had been unable to find a buyer for the business that would carry on the wonderful experience the customers have at Sleighbells. The current owners, Ken and Darleen McCoy, bought the farm in the summer of 2000, with a commitment to carry on the Sleighbells traditions started by Tom and Betty. We've been going strong ever since the new owners took over, and have started new traditions to boot.

The store has been expanded and improved extensively over the past 5 years. Stock room space was turned into retail space where we now have snowmen. The east end of the store has been turned entirely into Department 56 display space. A cash register and restroom was added two years ago the the east end also. Folks who haven't been in the store in many years comment on how much we've expanded.

The Wreath House moved into the main building after the first year of the new ownership, and the Tree House was put into the space that the Wreath House occupied. Trees are sold out of the Tree House at Christmas time along with Christmas lights, tree stands, and plain ornaments. The Wreath House moved into the garage that used to  house tree sales,  and the room was converted to its present look in the Summer of 2001.

In 2006, Teas Me Tea Room moved into our cafe area on the first floor. The Tea room features lunchs, three-tiered teas, and delightful desserts.

We are constantly changing the store, adding new displays and retiring older ones. We strive to keep the store interesting, and will continue to our progress toward our goal of being your year-round destination for unique gifts and decor items.
